The School Education Law of Japan defines institutions of higher education to consist of universities, junior colleges, and colleges of technology. Colleges of technology called "Kosen" were first introduced into the Japanese school system in 1961 in order to provide students between the ages of 15 and 20 with basic knowledge in humanities and natural sciences, and advanced skills in technology. The graduates receive an associate degree.
Maizuru National College of Technology (MNCT) was established in 1965, and now
consists of four departments. They are the Departments of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Control Engineering, and Civil Engineering. Up to now, approximately 4,370 graduates have actively engaged in different fields of employment.
In 2000, the Faculty of Advanced Engineering (FAE) was added to MNCT so as to enable students to proceed to a bachelorŐs degree in engineering acknowledged by the National Institution for Academic Degrees. FAE comprises two courses: Electrical-Control System Engineering (EC) and Civil-Industrial System Engineering (CI). In view of remarkable progress in modern science and technology which has changed our lives greatly, FAE trains students to make the best use of modern high-tech skills for the 21st century.
