Mission and History

The School Education Law of Japan defines institutions of higher education to consist of universities, junior colleges, and colleges of technology. Colleges of technology called “Kosen” were first introduced into the Japanese school system in 1961 in order to provide students between the ages of 15 and 20 with basic knowledge in humanities and natural sciences, and advanced skills and knowledge in technology. The graduates receive an associate degree.

NIT, Maizuru College was established in 1965, and now consists of four departments. They are the Departments of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Control Engineering, and Civil Engineering and Architecture.

In 2000, the Faculty of Advanced Engineering (FAE) was added to our college so as to enable students to proceed to a bachelor’s degree in engineering acknowledged by the National Institution for Academic Degrees and University Evaluation. FAE comprises three courses: Electrical and Electronic System Engineering Course, Mechanical and Control System Engineering Course, and Civil Engineering and Architecture Course. In view of remarkable progress in modern science and technology which has changed our lives greatly, FAE trains students to make the best use of modern high-tech skills for the 21st century.
